There is no cure for tinnitus, but the symptoms you are experiencing can be managed. If you have developed tinnitus during or when suffering from an illness, it is best to cure the underlying illness first before managing tinnitus. Seek ENT consultation to have the doctor do a thorough assessment of you to identify any underlying cause that contributed to the occurrence of tinnitus. Once this has been addressed and specific interventions are done, then we can manage your tinnitus. Always remember that untreated underlying causes of tinnitus can only worsen symptoms. Thus, it is of great importance to resolving any primary cause before the management of tinnitus. The following are some additional things that an individual can do to deal with tinnitus and its effects:
  • Home remedies would include sound therapy or sound-masking devices. There are devices that can play white noise, nature noise, background music, or particular ear maskers which can mask the person’s perception of tinnitus. These devices though can only offer temporary relief and when it is turned off, the awareness of tinnitus will return.
  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). More often than not, tinnitus is associated with emotional stress, depression, insomnia, anxiety, etc. It can make tinnitus worse, so stress management like relaxation techniques or therapy and exercise can be done to help alleviate symptoms.
  • Tinnitus retraining therapy. In combination with cognitive behavioral therapy and a sound-masking device, this can help a person to learn to acknowledge the unusual sounds brought about by tinnitus by means of ignoring or accepting it as natural rather than disturbing. These therapies are usually done together with professionals who will assist you in explaining the auditory system, how tinnitus develops over time, and how TRT can help improve your symptoms.
  • Medications. Tinnitus is oftentimes a result of stress-related events. There are medicines that can help suppress depression and/or stress, thus reducing tinnitus, at the same time improving your quality of time and less annoyance from it.
  • Hearing aids: When you have hearing loss at the time you experience tinnitus and you have started wearing hearing aids, you may notice that the better you are able to hear, the lesser you will hear and feel the symptoms of tinnitus.
