There are different types of hearing tests to undergo to check for the ears. There are different types of hearing tests to undergo to check for the ears. When a baby is born, the baby undergoes a hearing screening, but this is not the real test. This is just to screen whether the baby has normal hearing or not during childbirth, or if there is any indication of hearing loss. Children and adults undergo series of tests that are completely painless and safe to undertake. Usually, an ENT doctor would have you do any of the following: – Pure tone audiometry: This is a test where it uses both air and bone conduction. In air conduction, it measures your capability to hear sounds at different pitches and intensity. An audiometrist/audiologist usually assists during this test. You will be seated in a chair and a headset will be worn where you will hear sounds that vary from high to low and soft to loud. You will also be holding a response button which you will press once you hear the sound. All results will be charted in an audiogram sheet for interpretation. In bone conduction, it will measure the response of your inner ear to sounds where a conductor will be placed behind your ears. Any difference in the results will give the audiologist the information what type of hearing loss you have or if there is any. – Speech testing: This will look at how well you listen to and repeat words which will gauge your ability to distinguish speech from any background noise. – Tympanometry: This will measure the eardrum mobility in response to air pressure. It will ascertain whether there are any abnormalities within your eardrum and canal. – Auditory Brainstem Response: This is used to determine whether the outer ear, middle ear, inner ear and brain channels for hearing are working. This is also what is usually used to screen newborns for hearing problems. – Acoustic Reflex Measures: This tests the involuntary muscle contractions of the middle ear to identify which part has hearing problem and the kind of hearing loss. This is similar to a tympanometry. – Otoacoustic Emissions: This determines any abnormalities within the ear canal, middle ear or inner ear especially the cochlea.
