If you have a hearing device, you should know how to take care of them to avoid malfunction and to have a longer lifespan for your devices. The following are helpful tips in taking care of your hearing aids:

• Store them in a dry place to avoid the build-up of moisture. Moisture can cause damage to the device thus will cause malfunction. Hearing aids work best and last longer when they are dry and well taken care of.
• Avoid getting them wet. There may be hearing aids that are water-resistant, but still, avoid exposing them to moisture or water. Do not use any heater or dryer to dry them up when they get wet because heat can damage the device. Just use a towel or a soft, dry cloth.
• Check your batteries regularly. Usually batteries last 1 to 2 weeks. You can ask your doctor regarding the lifespan of batteries and how to change batteries at home. It is best if you have batteries stored, but make sure to store them in cool, dry places. It has always been known that batteries are toxic so handle them with care and dispose of them properly.
• Switch off your hearing aids when you are not using them. This will preserve the lifespan of your batteries. But if you will not be using your device for a longer period, it is best to remove the batteries because it will corrode and damage the device.
• Store your hearing aids away from the reach of children. Sometimes we forget where we place our devices and children play on them.
• Remove any earwax or dirt on your hearing aids to avoid malfunction.
• When cleaning your hearing aid at home, use a soft cloth. Do not insert anything into the sound outlet as this can damage the receiver and will not function properly.
• Schedule a routine check-up with your audiologist or ENT doctor to have your ears checked as well as your device to make sure that your ears are cleaned regularly and to avoid the accumulation of earwax in the device. Thus, preventing your devices from functioning properly.
